What Does Technology Mean for Fleet Management?

There’s no denying technology is changing fleet management. With each year that passes, more strides are made in fleet management technology.

From voice texting to autonomous vehicles, technology is becoming deeply ingrained in everything we do. There’s an app for just about anything you can imagine, and smartphone addiction is now a real thing!

whoopty doo but what does it all mean basil

The effects of fleet management technology

As the advances in technology become more robust and comprehensive, many people debate on whether or not this is good for our economy, the job marketplace and our standard of living. Baby boomers complain that smartphones have destroyed interpersonal communication, Millennials complain that baby boomers slow business down in a modern workplace, and Gen Y is stuck in the middle trying to figure out where they fit in.

With the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), automation and higher quality technological counterparts, it’s no longer a question of if - but when - jobs with human involvement will start getting replaced and outsourced to machines. The more menial jobs will go first, but this is nothing new. Manufacturing and production jobs have been getting replaced by machines for years - just look at the automotive industry.

How will technology impact fleet management?

With the recent developments in self-driving cars and fully autonomous vehicles, the question must be asked: “What will happen to fleet management?” How long will drivers retain their positions behind the wheel? How many jobs will be lost? A recent article published by Pew states that most experts are split on the true economic impact and how things will shake out.

Personally, I believe mankind will continue to adapt and improvise like we always have. Technology will certainly displace some jobs but will also create opportunities for new kinds of jobs.

The benefits of fleet data

The greatest thing about fleet technology for fleet management is the creation of data, and data allows for better decision making and a more efficient way of doing things. The biggest challenge with data is that we’re creating a lot of it. As technology advances, which it will, the data it spits off will advance with it, and with that will come new opportunities for analysis and implementation of data findings.

At Fleetio, we got a jump start on both sides of the fleet management technology discussion by allowing for automation of processes and dynamic data collection. We help fleets control the chaos of fleet management and provide technology solutions along with the necessary tools needed for better decision making.
